After Massage

Strathfield Massage

After a massage we should feel relaxed and clear minded. If we have a massage on a regular basis, these effects should be cumulative. If we follow a some basic healthy practices the effects of the massage will often last longer.

Drink Well –

This generation has had the importance of hydration strongly impressed upon them. We are constantly told to drink more water. This might have been a little exaggerated, but it is important. Really, it was compensating for the fact the previous generations had rather neglected water. We were just returning to normal.

Being well hydrated allows the massage therapist to really work and manipulate deep muscles. This is compromised if we are dehydrated. Adequate water also alleviates soreness after the massage.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which prevent the body from properly absorbing water.

Take a Bath or Shower –

Everybody has noticed the relaxing effects of a hot bath or shower. If we add Epson Salts to the bath water we increase the relaxing effect. Heating packs or rubbing deep heat creams are also useful.

Avoid Exertion –

While exercise is essential for health, we should avoid it after a massage. Wait for at least half a day. Or do your exercise the next day. Performing exercise too soon after massage will risk damage to the muscles, which will be too loose. It also ruins the feeling of relaxation, which is one of the main benefits of the massage.

Pay Attention to the Effects of the Massage –

The first massage may leave you feeling sore for a day or two, especially if you are out of shape. You might not experience this until several hours after the massage is over. When you have massages on a more regular basis, this phenomena will largely disappear.

Massage therapists should be happy to answer a few questions about the treatment, its benefits, and the after effects. They can also concentrate on any problem area that you feel might be of concern.
